Record Labels

Of the hundreds of active record labels, we've included a few notable ones because of their involvement with easy listening. Please e-mail us with your thoughts about any that should be added.

A&M -- The early days of A&M featured some wonderful releases in easy listening and instrumental music. Here's a link to an outstanding site where the people are truly passionate about the music and the artists.

Alanna -- Bill Lawrence has built a quality label with some extraordinarily fine releases. Artists include The Laurie Bower Singers, Al Caiola, Philip Green, Charlie Shaffer and others. They have a wonderful sampler CD that you can order on their toll-free telephone number. The site is worth a look and we think you'll like what they have to offer.

Avalon -- This Canadian record label has put out some unusual and nice easy listening CDs. Usually they are found in gift shops and rarely in record stores. They are affiliated with "Solitudes," one of the companies that puts animal sounds, waterfalls, oceans and bird calls behind beautiful music.

Collectables -- This company, which has been around for years releasing rock oldies, has licensed and released several easy listening projects within the past two years, including many Ray Conniff and Percy Faith albums that have never before been on CD. More releases are planned for the future, so keep an eye on this site.

Dulcima -- This is the record label started by the late Johnny Douglas. Dulcima specializes in superior quality recordings of orchestral music in the Easy Listening, MOR style. Johnny Douglas founded Dulcima Records in 1984. He felt that, having spent his life so far writing and recording arrangements for other record companies, it was time he formed his own record company. This way he could choose the material to record and have full control over the production from concept to completion.

Northstar Northstar -- These are the folks who operate the music kiosks you see and hear in gift shops. You will find all of their current music on this website along with ordering instructions.

Parfait Records -- This is a "new record label that is dedicated to Easy Music and nothing else." Their mission is to locate, restore and release great recordings from the past, and to record new "Lush and Easy arrangements of your favorite songs."

Phase 4 Opinions Phase 4 -- We all remember the great releases that were put out on the Phase 4 label on vinyl. Various opinions about Phase 4 can be read at "Phase 4 Opinions." A discography of Phase 4 releases in the UK on Decca can be viewed at "Decca/UK." Our friend Terence Tegner has also compiled a comprehensive list of UK Phase 4 releases that can be viewed here.

Phase 4 on CD
in Italy

Fifty of the wonderful Phase 4 recordings were released on compact disc in Italy a few years back. Unfortunately, they are all probably out-of-print now. But dedicated collectors may still find a few in Italian record shops. We've provided a complete list of the artists and titles for you...good luck!.

Studio Two Studio Two -- EMI released some great recordings on their "Studio Two" label. A discography of EMI Studio 2 vinyl releases can be viewed here.

Taragon -- This record company has been releasing quality reissues including the Bert Kaempfert catalog. Also on the label are Percy Faith, Norman Luboff and David Rose compilations. Quality on these CD's is fantastic. Detailed information is available on their website.

Canadian Talent Library -- The Canadian Talent Library (CTL) was formed in 1967 by Canadian radio director J. Lyman Potts with support from the Canadian broadcasting community. The purpose of the non-profit company was to produce and distribute recordings of Canadian works and Canadian artists, both to broadcasters and the public.

During its existence, the CTL produced some wonderful recordings and issued approximately 250 record albums that could be purchased by anyone interested in owning their own copy of the exceptional music. Sadly, the trust was disbanded about 1985.

Because there are so many fans who loved the music produced by the CTL, we've compiled a discography of the record albums released to the public (click here to view the listing in PDF form*). As far as we know, none of the records are currently for sale except on the used record market. The notable exception is recordings of the Laurie Bower Singers, some of which have been remastered on compact disc and released by Alanna.
