Research Tools

We've found  several informative sites on the web that will help you do research on artists, song titles and music releases. Some of the best ones are listed here but we're always looking for more. If you know of any, send ‘em our way.

All Music Guide -- This incredible site will let you search every which-way: By artist, title, album, label, etc. Often the search results can be staggering because there is so much information. One caveat, however, is that as good as this site is, it is far from complete, especially in the world of instrumentals. Still, it can deliver a plethora of information. Dig in!

ACMI -- And, if you're looking for information about Canadian artists and music, here's the Canadian counterpart.

Argus Music Searcher -- This premium site allows you to search for other websites by artist and also has news, forums, MP3 links and other services. If you don't find a link to a specific artist, it allows you to add one if you know the URL. That way, the site is always improving as a research source. It really works well when fans have input the information. We entered James Last and it found thirteen fan sites! Take a visit!

Artist Direct -- While this site has a lot of junk surrounding the information, the artist links can be exceptionally useful depending on how much information they have on whomever you are researching. You will have to put up with advertising and screen pops, but getting the good stuff--the information--can make it worthwhile.

Belgian Pop
Archives
Belgian Pop Archives -- This site can be useful when researching non-American artists. We found some great information about Francis Goya on this site.

Breakup-songs Breakup-songs.com -- Here's a specialized song lyric resource site for the lovelorn and lonely hearted... Just the place to visit "When Your Lover Has Gone"...

The Universal
Currency
Converter
Currency Converter -- Buying music from another country? You might want to know what it will cost you before you give your credit card number! This site can help you figure it out, quickly and painlessly.

Gracenote -- This incredible service cross-links song titles, artists and albums. To fully understand the power of it, you really need to go to the site and read the instruction page and then try it on a couple of your favorite tunes. You will not believe how powerful this site is. Really. Go ahead...try it!

International Lyrics Playground -- According to the opening page, this is "the most comprehensive lyrics site on the net! We are not here to bring you the latest hits. ARCHIVED LYRICS ARE FROM ARTISTS, COMPOSERS WHO WERE ESTABLISHED PRE 1980." There are over 15,400 lyrics listed, links to other sites and even a section to help them identify lyrics that they're looking for.

Lyrics Connection -- We've been wanting to add a good song lyrics reference source for the longest time. Unfortunately, the premier site for song lyrics, based in Switzerland, was shut down by the music industry. You can read why at this link we've provided, plus it links to the best "out there" right now. If you find a good lyrics site, please forward it to us and we'll include a link.

Lyrics World -- This site has an impressive collection that dates back to 1930. If you're looking for the lyrics to The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don't Be Late), as an example, this is the place for you!

recordmaster.com -- If you need to research pop records, this interactive site can be of great use. From the main menu, you can choose your search criteria, including title, artist, record label and configuration. While not complete in terms of all worldwide releases, it can turn up some elusive information that would be hard to find elsewhere. If you're "into" research, take a peek.

SDL Translation Service -- Did ya ever pick up a CD and find that it had several foreign titles and you didn’t know what they were in English? It’s happening more and more as CDs from other countries find their way around the world. One of our favorite sites to translate these titles is made available courtesy of SDL International. What we like about it is that it makes no false promises: It says it will deliver the "gist" of what you’re trying to translate...and that’s exactly what it does. We put in a French title (Ils Ont Change Ma Chanson) from a Raymond Lefevre CD and got back "They Have Change My Song." Well, the title in English is known as both "What Have They Done To My Song, Ma" and "Look What They’ve Done to My Song, Ma." Close, and very useful if you have a little flexibility and imagination. Sure beats getting out a dictionary and trying to do it yourself...and the price is right!

Songfacts -- Here's a site devoted to music trivia at its finest. Just when you were sitting around wondering if a Nirvana song came from a brand of deodorant a site comes along that can answer your burning question. You can search by title or year or browse that way, too. Take the "Mighty Songfacts Quiz" and if you're an expert you might even win a Songfacts T-Shirt! In any event, a trip here will reward you with something you didn't know about music and we bet that you'll be back for more!
